Chick Trip 2002

June 20th

Gila, New Mexico & Silver City, New Mexico

This morning we got up, determined that having a rental car would not ruin our vacation.  Heck, we could still go see the sights we wished and still stay within the mileage restrictions.  We decided to check on the car and then go to the Gila Cliff Dwellings.

When we got to Jeff's garage, we were told the part was still on order but expected the next day.  While we were there, Gale stopped by and we four gals decided to attend the Melodrama on Saturday night at the Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House in Palo Altos, which is about seven miles outside of Silver City.  We had a nice visit with Rena and Gale, but Lela and I were anxious to get going, so we headed out to the Cliff Dwellings.  We have both been there before, but it is always worth it to visit this place because of the unique natural beauty of it; the dwellings are high in a cliffside, but they overlook a narrow, tree-filled ravine which is split by a creek. The sound of the water and leaves as one walks upward to the homes of the ancient Mogellon is fantastically relaxing; you can just imagine how the Indians must have felt living here.

What is the coolest cliff dwelling site we have been to? The Answer is the Gila Cliff Dwellings outside of Silver City, New Mexico!

It takes a while to get up to the cliffs and if you are from Florida, you certainly are not used to climbing this far above sea level.  We were pretty tuckered out by the time we reached the top! You can see the buildings behind us; pretty cool, huh?

Here are some shots of Lela and me exploring the buildings.

The freakiest part of this little trip was when we headed back and were almost over the little river that flows near the visitor's center.  There were dozens of the biggest tadpoles you have ever seen!  They had to measure 5 inches from nose to tip of tail.  There was a small snake that had caught one and was trying to swallow it (even with its newly developed legs) and swim at the same time.

We set off for home that afternoon.  Once at the Casitas, we rested and made the last of the buffalo burgers.  Then we decided to check out the hot tub!  Woohoo! Was that awesome!

Wow, did we deserve this after a long day climbing cliffs!
